One general 'Yorkshire Dales' website is Yorkshire Net. There are seperate links to B&B, Hotels, Camping etc, and for different areas (YDSC is in the Southern Dales section). Appletreewick is about 3.5 miles and Grassington approx 7.5 miles from YDSC. http://www.yorkshirenet.co.uk/accgde/index.htm Many sailors choose to stay, eat and drink in Appletreewick - or close by - as it's the nearest village, it's very picturesque, has 3 campsites, and 2 good pubs as well as a great Dales 'feel' and atmosphere! The other information below has been gathered from various sources such as the Dalesman, tourist guides, B&B signs etc and so may not be 100% up to date.
CAMPING There are several campsites as well as two pubs etc at Appletreewick (2.5 miles from Grimwith) see map at link below. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=405160&Y=460480&A=Y&Z=3 The nearest campsite is Howarth Farm, Skyreholmes, Appletreewick. 01756 720226 Details are a bit sketchy - this site can best be described as 'basic' (although there are toilets and showers) and its cheapest. On the Map, its the site furthest East - in a stunning location, looking up to Simons Seat (that's the rock formation on top of the fell) and close to Parceval Gardens / Trollers Gill. From Grimwith, Turn left at the exit from the reservoir road, climb the hill and down the other side - turn right towards Appletreewick. In 2 Miles, you go down a pretty steep hill with sharp bends. Turn sharp left at a junction to Skyreholme (there is an school type building on the corner) Howarth Farm is on the right shortly afterwards. It's about a 15 min walk into Appletreewick on narrow (generally quiet) country roads or 20 - 25 minutes on a riverside footpath.
Masons Campsite (01756 720275)http://www.masonscampsite.co.uk/Welcome_.html is the westernmost site on the map - nearest the village, pubs etc and next to the River. It has showers and other amenities. Masons site is very popular in Summer and for that reason 'one night' bookings can be a problem. Ring them to check availability on Saturday mornings or book to stay more than one night. Rates (as of Spring 2009) are Single tents £10 a night. Doubles £16. Pitch with Electricity hook up £18.
Both Masons and Howarth are working farms as well as campsites - if that doesn't suit you - read on!
A bit posher site with good facilities is Howgill Lodge. It's the one to the south on the map (near Howgill). From their website" A small select Park offers you a modern toilet block, hot showers, laundry room, washing up sinks and a small well stocked shop with daily supplies of milk and provisions. Electricity is available for Touring Caravans. All caravan pitches are hard standing. The Park has been carefully terraced to give everyone a share of our magnificent view. Only the most responsible dog owners are welcome." Touring pitch prices for 2009 are from £16 per night for a Motorvan or caravan with two people and electricity, or the same £16 for a tent and car with two people. Tel 01756 720655 The Howgill Lodge website has links to BOLTON ABBEY ESTATE which offers a choice of other accommodation and several 'things to do' Slightly further afield is the Woodnook campsite at Skirethornes near Grassington BED AND BREAKFAST.
The website for New Inn at Appletreewick says: We have 5 double rooms which are bed and breakfast £85 per room......NOT PER PERSON......!!! This also includes £10 discount Per Person of your evening meal as well. I can confirm the New Inn does great grub! So if you eat there, the room works out at roughly £32.50 per person - 01756 720252. Nigel & Tracy Wain, Andras Farm, Appletreewick, BD23 6DA http://www.andrasfarm.co.uk
