A round up of training at Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club
TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CLUB MEMBERS-2010
Following last years highly successful members training on Saturday mornings through the Gybe Scheme, we will be running nine such sessions in 2010. These are for both junior and adult club members who want to learn to sail or improve their sailing skills and for juniors to get an introduction to race training.The sessions are from 10 am to 12 noon on the following dates:

Sat 9 Oct (+Awards Ceremony)
These sessions are run by the Gybe RYA 'Onboard' scheme on a totally voluntary basis providing tuition from fully qualified staff in both sailing and windsurfing; safety cover and access to Gybe/Bewerley Park boats and boards as well as the club training boats. All this is free of charge to YDSC members! The sessions are aimed at juniors and at new/novice adult members who wish to improve their skills/ confidence. Those attending regularly will be able to progress through RYA syllabuses and will be award Certificates at the end of the season.

The Club are very appreciative of this extra committment to club training provided by Gybe/Bewerley Park Centre and all volunteer helpers. The club is supporting these sessions with extra duty cover at these times. Any YDSC members who would like to volunteer to assist on these sessions would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Sam Cook. Volunteers who show a real commitment may be able to get assistance with the cost of appropriate training courses such as 'Safetyboat' and RYA Dinghy Instructor.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON IMPROVERS TRAINING SESSIONS - SAILING
These sessions are aimed at both young people and adults who have done some sailing but wish to improve their skills and confidence levels. Support and tuition will be available with the aim of helping participants to become competent and confident, independent sailors. These sessions will be led by Peter Robinson, the Regional RYA Club Coach and supported by other club volunteers.
Sessions will take place on the following 6 Saturday afternoons:

Sat 19th June
Sat 17th July
Sat 24th July
Sat 28th Aug
Sat 9th Oct
These follow on from the Saturday morning GYBE/YDSC morning training sessions. Members can either use their own boats or borrow club boats (subject to availability). Gybe boats will not be available on 22nd May, or 17th July but may be available on the other 4 Saturdays.

WINDSURFING
Sam Cook is also going to be holding windsurfing clinics for both beginners and intermediates on the following 4 Saturday afternoons:

Members can use their own boards or loan Gybe windsurfing equipment for these sessions.

SUNDAY MORNING RACE TRAINING
These sessions are aimed both young sailors and adults who are now reasonably competent and confident independent sailors who want to move into/ improve their racing skills. Participants can use their own boats or club boats (subject to availability) and need to be ready in their sailing kit, with their boat rigged and ready at the waters’ edge by 10am. Race training exercises/ coaching will take place between 10.15 and 11.15 and the group will then join in the first club race with a separate start/ shortened course as appropriate. There will be on the water coaching and and end of race debrief.
It is hoped to run these sessions on approximately 8 Sundays throughout the season. Dates to be confirmed.

RYA COURSES
Do you want to learn to sail, windsurf or improve your powerboat skills?
Courses are available to club members or prospective members with Erica Caswell (RYA Coach & the club's training officer) via our partnership with Bewerley Park Centre for Outdoor Education.
In a typical year we will offer a wide range of courses such as:
RYA Level 1 - a beginners 2 day introduction to sailing
RYA Level 2 - a 2 day follow on from Level 1 or for those who have a little experience
RYA Sailing with Spinnakers - A 2 day introduction to sailing with spinnakers, participants need to be Level 2 or equivalent
Kids Holiday Course for 11 to 16 year old Beginners/Improvers
Beginners Family sailing - responding to a number of requests from families wanting to learn to sail together. Aimed at parents with kids aged 9-12
RYA Instructor Training and Assessment - A 5 day course for competant sailors seriously wanting to impart their knowledge to others, various pre-entry requirements apply.
We also run a powerboat familiarisation courses, Powerboat Level 2 and a Safety boat course which requires Powerboat level 2 as apre-qualification
