Another glorious day in store for the Grimwith Grapple Handicap open. And what a way to finish on the new club house patio with cake and drinks to celabrate.
Race one with light f2 and the odd f3 gusts it was the visitors of Mick and Mark Pullan (ISO) leading at the windward mark. A broad reach followed by a reach across the lake moved Martin and Barbara Smith (RS500) closer to the leader. As they rounded for a run down to leeward mark, the fleet split. the ISO went high looking for wind. The Vortex of Phil Whitehead, RS400 visitors of Adrian Brooks/Paul Salmon and Keith Escritt/Anne Saul (RS200)wend down the middle as Mike Saul/Sophie Hartley (RS200), Andrew and Eve Hartley (RS200) and Smith'S (RS500) went low. At the bottom it didnt make much difference as Pullan held off Smith to start the next lap. Another long beat and difficult lap saw the RS800 of Mike Mawson and Nick Hancock starting to catch up after a slow start. But with only a handfull of seconds splitting the RS200s, Escritt/Saul took 1st with Saul/Hartley 2nd and Hartley/Hartley 3rd on corrected handicap times.
Race two was led from start to finish by Smith's (RS500) as they pulled out an enormous gap at the top mark. Wireing it across the reach and flat out all the way to the leeward mark as the wind filled in to take an easy win. Saul/Hartley (RS200) 2nd and Whitehead (Vortex) moving into 3rd position.
Race three after lunch with the wind shifting more saw a simular theme to race two but this time with the RS400 of Brooks/Salmon leading the way around. Close enough behind was Saul/Hartley (RS200) improving a position to finish 1st. Escritt/Saul (RS200) 2nd and a fine 3rd for Brooks/Salmon (RS400).
As the wind increased for race four, Mawson/Hancock (RS800) were enjoying leading the fleet around. With the extra breeze this brought the vortex's of Ian Craven, Phil Whitehead and Andrew Straton to the front to complete the 1st lap. But as quick as it increased, it decreased to a low f2. With this the Smith's (RS500) working their way back to the front to take a second race win. Saul/Hartley (RS200) back to their customary 2nd place and Niel Ferguson (Contender) into 3rd.
This ment that Mike Saul and Sophie Hartley (RS200) took the overall win. Keith Escritt and Anne Saul (RS200) a close second with Martin and Barbara Smith (RS500) in 3rd. Ian Smith (Phantom) in 5th breaking the RS dominance. 1st junior was Callum Escritt (topper). And a creditable 11th overall in race three beating some established sailors.
MSDS provided lots of prizes and as overall winner, Mike thanked all those involved in the smooth running of this event.
