A great turnout of 30 boats with 16 classes from 7 clubs including several National and Inland champions were delighted with the generous helpings of bright sunshine and breeze on offer at Grimwith, despite the poor forecast.
Just before the briefing the wind rapidly picked up from a F1 to a North Easterly F3-F4 causing many entrants to opt for dry suits, and a few changes of sails / crews or boats. However, the wind eased back to a very pleasant F2-F3 by the time we started race #1 - a normal mass start handicap race which was won convincingly by Chris Pickles and Laura Westell (RS 200), followed by Mike Saul and Deb Fletcher (RS 500), Richard Robinson (who was sailing his Standard Vortex around the course just as fast as the Asymmetric Vortexes) and Richard Whiteley / Dan Phillips (RS200) Races 2 and 3 after lunch were pursuit races with the start times calculated from individual performances in the first race - this usually leads to some very close finishes and different faces with huge smiles at the front of the pack. The wind eased a little for race 2 and Tim Sadler / Tom Tindall (B14) finished just ahead of Keith and Siobhan Escritt (29er) followed by Mike Collins (Vortex) and Ian / Jen Blair (B14). The wind eased another notch for race 3 which was won by Erica Caswell and Graham Cook (Laser 4000) from Ian McLean (Phantom), Mike Collins and James Penty / Deb Fletcher (RS Feva) Photographs of most competitors are available in the Photo Gallery. Huge thanks to the duty team and especially Pippa Fletcher for "manning" the Galley.
