Introduction to Windsurfing

Introduction to windsurfing at Yorkshire Dales SC

YDSC is simply the best windsurfing venue in the area. It's very BIG and being at 1000' (300m) altitude, the wind is nearly always blowing a good force or two stronger than elsewhere.

Windsurfer jumps

In almost all wind directions the potential for straight line blasting and fun manoeuvres is huge, and in all directions but a straight southerly, the winds are usually clean and steady. In a strong westerly, there's a superb 1 mile stretch of water upwind which allows some significant waves to build up for easy jumping. Loops and all manner of aerial trickery have been a regular feature from some of our experts!

The less daring have great fun chop-hopping, riding the swells and just blasting. In gentler conditions there's plenty of room for beginners and intermediates to get going or practice their skills and there's always the wonderful scenery to admire.

Access is easy with plenty of room for parking and rigging near the water, we even have a dedicated launching ramp / walkway for windsurfers! Grimwith is a safe venue, with an escort boat on the water most weekends. At most other times club members (but not day visitors) can 'buddy sail'. So whenever there's wind someone will probably be out there. Join us and it could be you!

  • Around 400 acres of superb water
  • 1000' (300m) altitude so higher than usual wind speeds
  • Steady and clean winds from most directions (anything except Southerly)
  • Great for blasting, chop hopping and pure fun!
  • Windsurfing visitors always welcome.

We run RYA windsurfing courses for all levels.  See the What's on section below for more info.

The club owns a few modern boards and rigs which are available for use by members. (Non members should enquire if interested in loan equipment).

Our Windsurfing Development Plan will give you a good feel for the direction that windsurfing at YDSC is going.  You can access it via the link in the Main Menu.

See you on the water!
